Robotics are an integral part of any modern STEM curriculum as they provide an opportunity for students to gain vital competencies and skills in critical thinking and collaboration, building their ability and confidence to have ideas, share them and make them real. The micro:bit is a physical computing device which resides on the same principles of programming and operation as VEX, Lego Mindstorms, or Makeblock robots.

As the first international Microsoft Showcase School in China, Wellington College International Tianjin enjoys an excellent relationship with Microsoft and supported access to 21st Century educational tools, services, and products. Among these are customized sets of micro:bits powered by Microsoft MakeCode, a visual programming framework aimed at facilitating programming for educational single-board computers such as micro:bit and Lego Mindstorms, as well as sandbox platforms like Minecraft.

Micro:bit was launched in the United Kingdom by the BBC, aimed to facilitate computer science education and align it with children’s innate hands-on learning methodology of practising by doing. Working with micro:bit computing devices will help children develop fluency in concepts of computer systems, through computational thinking and problem-solving. It will also foster children’s creativity, through technology-enabled innovative approaches to set challenges, as well as allow them to learn from mistakes and improve their design accordingly. Programming micro:bits to make use of available sensors and peripheral devices empower children to see the connection between a concept or an idea they have and a real-world design as a tangible outcome which is achieved through the process of designing, building, prototyping, and iterating.
