My name is Melissa Meikle, and I am the Year 6 class teacher at Wellington College International, Tianjin. I am so excited to be introducing LAMDA speaking and acting classes in the Junior School. Throughout my career, it has always been a real pleasure to watch children performing and speaking with confidence and passion, and these classes will give the opportunities to develop the skills of communication and oracy.
Founded in 1861, LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) is the oldest drama school in the UK. LAMDA started to offer examinations in speech and drama to the public over 130 years ago.
LAMDA Speech and Drama classes are drama lessons leading to exams set by the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art. These exams are designed to develop the skills necessary to communicate dramatic text to an audience. Learners will develop interpretative skills, technical skills, and knowledge of the performance process. It will enable learners to grow in both vocal and physical confidence, developing their oracy skills and self-expression.
During exams, the students will be required to perform scenes from memory, audibly and clearly, showing that they understand the meaning of what they are speaking and be able to use the space to complement their performance. All learners will be required to learn one or two pieces depending on which level of exam they take. Examinations are taken on an annual basis and are assessed by an external examiner in the United Kingdom. Candidates are awarded with a pass, merit or distinction and are issued with a certificate after the examination.
Examinations can be taken at different levels:
The process of preparing for and succeeding in a LAMDA examination essentially helps learners, whatever their ages or aspirations, to develop a broad range of skills that will serve them throughout life.
