So, what will your child benefit from if he/she is enrolled for the Mathematics class at the Wellington College Academy? All the students will have the rare opportunity of accessing a mathematics curriculum that:

  1. a) inspires creativity and makes the learner think out of the box by asking the question; what can I do to solve the problem? Are there alternative methods?
  2. b) is founded on an inquiry-based type of learning in which the students consistently ask the question, why? Why this formula? Why this method? This discourages rote memorization of concepts.
  3. c) connects mathematics to nature and real life experiences and begs the question; How is this concept related to everyday life? How can I apply this concept?
  4. d) Integrates technology by use of current and emerging ICT tools.
  5. e) Is flexible to the child’s needs by deploying various differentiation techniques and therefore makes learning math fun.

There are two main levels for the mathematics classes;

Ages 6 – 7

This group will be introduced to the key mathematical vocabulary and taught the foundational concepts of lower elementary mathematics. Topics are designed to be interactive around the key areas of Geometry & Measure, Numbers, Shapes & Space and Data Handling. Learning here is less of abstract mathematics, but more of connecting everything to real life situations.

Ages 8 -11

This group will be taken through deeper understanding and logical reasoning involved in the topic areas mentioned above. The approach here is mainly investigative and inquiry based through fun activities and a carefully designed environment. Tasks are also differentiated to cater for different abilities and may be abstract in nature.
